Saturday looks like a pleasant summer day in Thunder Bay: a mix of sun and cloud with a high near 25°C and just a 30% chance of an afternoon shower. Winds stay light and the overnight low settles around 12°C — comfortable weather for the pow wow, a market stroll or a patio. A fine day to be outside; keep water and a little sunscreen handy in case the sun wins out. Full forecast at Environment Canada.

A second turn lane is coming to the Harbour Expressway

One of Thunder Bay's busiest — and most crash-prone — intersections is getting an upgrade. The city has closed the existing eastbound left-turn lane at Harbour Expressway and Golf Links Road to build a second left-turn lane, part of a project to ease congestion and improve safety along one of the city's key growth corridors. Expect a little patience at the lights while crews finish the work.
A blaze severely damages homes on Johnson Avenue

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews knocked down a serious fire on Johnson Avenue, in the Bay and Water Streets area, on Thursday afternoon. The blaze started at a vacant, boarded-up home before spreading to a neighbouring house and scorching the siding of a third. No one was hurt. It was the second fire at the abandoned property this year, and the cause is under investigation.
Police free a bear cub with a jug stuck on its head

A curious bear cub near Whitefish got itself into a sticky spot with a plastic jug stuck over its head. Officers safely captured the cub, carefully slipped the container off unharmed, and — with guidance from the Ministry of Natural Resources — released it back where it was found in hopes of reuniting with its mother. A happy ending, and a timely reminder to seal up garbage and rinse out recyclables.
Kasabonika Lake evacuees wait out wildfires in Toronto

Nearly 600 members of Kasabonika Lake First Nation — mostly elders, children and people with medical needs — are staying in the Toronto area after a cluster of wildfires threatened the fly-in community. Recent rain has helped stabilize the fires, though lightning from passing storms is keeping crews on alert. Leaders are watching conditions closely to decide when it's safe for evacuees to head home.

Trivia answer: A flamboyance! A group of flamingos is called a "flamboyance" — a fittingly flashy name for such bright pink birds. They get that colour from pigments in the algae and shrimp they eat.
