Neighbours call a reworked Junot-area apartment plan a 'betrayal' after the city approves a $5.2-million lot sale
City council has approved the sale of the city-owned lot at 300 Tokio St. as part of a $5.2-million deal for three properties, clearing the way for a 400-unit development at Junot Avenue South and John Street. At a public information night this week, neighbour Rod Seabrook said the concept has quietly reverted to a design the public rejected back in 2025 — "there is a sense of betrayal amongst the residents," he said.
The city says a Ministry of Transportation setback requirement and unexpectedly shallow bedrock forced the developer to rework the layout, adding ground-level parking and removing the tree buffer behind homes on Picton Avenue. Residents say it still adds up to 400 units squeezed onto a more constrained site, whatever the reason.

A library 50/50 ticket turns into a $27,300 win
Tracey Greer almost missed the call — she and her husband, regular library users, just won more than $27,300 in the Friends of the Library's September 50/50 draw. "You never really think you're going to win," she said.
Half the pot goes to the winner and half funds the revitalization of the Waverley branch's children's library. The fundraiser has now paid out more than $725,000 since it launched in December 2024, and the October draw is already open.

Police warn of scammers posing as the Thunder Bay North Stars
Thunder Bay police say someone has been emailing residents and businesses posing as the Thunder Bay North Stars hockey club, offering fake sponsorship and vendor spots at home games for a $500 deposit.
The emails aren't from the team, and police note that phone numbers and email addresses can be spoofed — anyone approached should contact the organization directly before sending any money.

A Lac Seul constable trades the northwest for Abu Dhabi on a first-of-its-kind exchange
Constable Bradyn Edwards of the Lac Seul Police Service, about 300 km northwest of Thunder Bay, is spending five months in the United Arab Emirates on an exchange with the Abu Dhabi Police Service — the first time a First Nations police service in Canada has taken part in a program like it.
Edwards applied on the last day of the window and got just ten days' notice before flying out. Between coursework at the Abu Dhabi Police College, he's visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and a falconry and date farm with fellow officers from around the world. "It's otherworldly compared to our neck of the woods in northern Ontario," he said.
