Epiroc opens a new mining service facility on Amber Drive

Epiroc, the mining equipment maker formerly known as Atlas Copco, has opened a new Thunder Bay location at 1239 Amber Drive. The 9,862-square-foot facility has warehouse space and a rock drill repair centre, and its grand opening drew people from across the mining industry, along with Mayor Ken Boshcoff and Fort William First Nation Chief Michele Solomon. General manager Dawn Nigro says the city is poised to become a major mining hub and that the company is seeing demand for its products in Northwestern Ontario. Nigro also says many of Epiroc's machines can be run remotely, so some of that work could eventually be done from a control centre here rather than at the mine.

The weekend raised nearly $200,000 for Easter Seals, making it the organization's largest fundraiser of the year.

The Stanley Cup visits Pikangikum First Nation

The NHL and the Hockey Hall of Fame brought the Stanley Cup to Pikangikum First Nation, a remote Ojibway community about 230 kilometres north of Kenora, on Oct. 21 and 22. Elders got the first look, followed by about 1,500 students and then most of the rest of the community of more than 3,000. Amanda Sainnawap of the Pikangikum Education Authority says it took a lot of co-ordination, and the NHL says the goal was to uplift the spirits of youth and celebrate the community. It follows a 2017 Stanley Cup visit to Sandy Lake First Nation, also in northwestern Ontario.
