A tornado touched down northeast of Cat Lake First Nation on Sept. 8, researchers confirm

Storm clouds over a boreal forest and lake

The Northern Tornadoes Project has confirmed an EF1 tornado in an uninhabited area near Redpath Lake, northeast of Cat Lake First Nation. It left a damage track about 7.5 kilometres long and up to 150 metres wide, with estimated peak winds of 145 km/h. Nobody reported it at the time; researchers spotted the damage in satellite imagery. It is the second tornado confirmed in Northwestern Ontario this year, after an EF2 near Kenora on July 6, and the project has now confirmed a record 140 across Canada in 2026. The team expects to confirm more as it keeps reviewing this summer's satellite images, so the northwest's tally for the year may still grow.

Shuniah opens at 8:30 a.m. and Neebing at 9 a.m., and Neebing has no traditional paper-ballot polling locations. Mayoral candidates split on strong mayor powers

An empty council chamber

Several candidates for Thunder Bay mayor told TBT News they will refuse to use the provincial strong mayor powers if they are elected this fall, while others are split on the question. Online voting opens Oct. 19 and the election is Oct. 26, so where each candidate stands on these powers is worth knowing before you vote.

🗳️ Your call: several mayoral candidates say they would refuse Ontario's strong mayor powers. How should the next mayor handle them?

Featured Bakery: The Persian Man

Pink-iced pastries on a bakery tray

Overview

If you've grown up in Thunder Bay, you know the Persian: a sweet, pink-iced pastry that locals treat as a hometown original. According to a 2017 TVO story, it was created in the mid-1940s by Art Bennett of Bennett's Bakery, and The Persian Man is the coffee shop that carries the bakery's goods. Family lore says the name came from U.S. General John "Black Jack" Pershing, who supposedly visited while the dough was being made.

Highlights

  • The Persian itself, with icing that TVO reported gets its pink mostly from jam rather than added colouring

  • Butter tarts and other baking, according to customer reviews

  • A small coffee shop with a light lunch menu

  • A catering inquiry form on their website for larger orders

Ambiance & Experience

Think neighbourhood bakery counter rather than trendy café: quick, friendly and family-friendly, with parking on site.

Operating Hours

  • 899 Tungsten St.: Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
