Dilico's Step Up Kids Awards are looking for the region's helpers, leaders, dreamers and changemakers

Dilico Anishinabek Family Care is asking people in Thunder Bay and surrounding communities to nominate kids aged 4 to 16 who are stepping up, whether that means helping others, honouring and celebrating their culture, being a good friend or just being plain awesome. Ten children from the Thunder Bay district will be honoured in November and receive a prize pack, a photoshoot and a Step Up poster. Parents, teachers, coaches, relatives and neighbours can nominate at dilico.com/stepup until Oct. 23.
Last year's recipients included a 13-year-old who sews her own ribbon skirts, sings, dances and drums, and a 12-year-old who organizes recess games so every kid can join in. Dilico will also host Step Up Community Booths at Goods & Co. on Oct. 10 and the Thunder Bay Country Market on Oct. 17, where kids can decorate their own Step Up footprint and adults can nominate on the spot. The October campaign, held every year, asks Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to share responsibility for the safety and well-being of children and youth.
