Two orphaned bear cubs are recovering after a train killed their mother near Loon Lake

Two black bear cubs in a tree in an autumn forest

Two bear cubs are on the mend at a wildlife rehabilitation facility in Nipigon after their mother was struck and killed by a train near West Loon Lake in Shuniah on Sept. 19. The Ministry of Natural Resources says staff judged the cubs too young to survive alone and captured them on Sept. 22. They will stay in care until they can be released next year.

The ministry says northwestern bear reports are lower than at this time last year, but fall is when hungry bears look for food before denning. Secure your garbage, report non-emergency sightings to the Bear Wise line at 1-866-514-2327, and call 911 if a bear is an immediate threat.

Three candidates, no incumbent: who wants Westfort's council seat?

A neighbourhood street in autumn with blank lawn signs

With the sitting councillor not running, three candidates are competing for the Westfort ward seat in the Oct. 26 municipal election: Angel Gamble, Clint Harris and Stephen Margarit. CBC News asked each of them to answer the same three questions in about 100 words: why they are running, which issues they want to tackle in the ward, and what their first priority would be.

Their full answers are in CBC's side-by-side Q&A, which is a quick way to compare them before the ballots open.

🗳️ Your call: with no incumbent in Westfort, what should the next councillor tackle first?

Trivia answer: Seven. A giraffe has the same number of neck vertebrae as a human, but each one is hugely elongated, which is what stretches the neck to roughly two metres.
