The first tenants move into the temporary shelter village today

A row of small tiny-home cabins on a gravel lot in autumn light

City officials say 40 of the village's 80 tiny-home units are hooked up to electricity and ready for the first tenants, who are scheduled to move in Friday. Encampment response supervisor Rilee Willianen says the other buildings should come online over the next couple of weeks, and that the scale-up will depend on how things go, with no firm timeline for filling all 80.

The units are not permanent homes. Tenants must be 18 or older and experiencing homelessness, and can stay a maximum of four years while they look for something longer-term, with the village working alongside the District Social Services Administration Board and its partners.

Thunder Bay Public Library workers set an Oct. 16 strike deadline

A quiet library reading area with shelves of books and an empty table by a window

More than 70 library workers represented by CUPE 3120 and CUPE 87-18 say all four Thunder Bay Public Library branches could face a strike or lockout as of 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 16 if there's no deal. The union points to proposed concessions on benefits, sick and vacation time and early retirement, and says about 20 layoffs were expected because the Waverley branch is closing for renovations.

Library CEO Richard Togman says there's no intention of a lockout and no plan to hire replacement workers, and that any deal has to fit the library's budget. A meeting with a provincial conciliator is set for Oct. 14.

A Lac Seul artist's giant YWG sign greets arrivals at the Winnipeg airport

A large pink and yellow painted floral art installation in an airport hall

Storm Angeconeb, a member of Lac Seul First Nation in Treaty 3 territory, created the large pink-and-yellow YWG installation at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport for Wednesday's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It's painted with flowers and chickadees, and carries portraits of her grandmother and her son in a tikinagan.

Angeconeb says the piece is about what survival makes possible: if her grandmother hadn't survived residential school, neither she nor her son would be here, and she's raising him in the culture her grandmother nearly lost.

Trivia answer: Salt. Salarium comes from the Latin sal, “salt” — traditionally explained as a Roman soldier's allowance for buying salt, though historians debate the exact story.
