Trivia: How many hearts does an octopus have? (Answer at the bottom!)

Your week ahead in and around Thunder Bay:

Tuesday, June 23

Wednesday, June 24

Thursday, June 25

Friday, June 26

A mix of sun and cloud to start the week — a high near 21°C, dipping to about 8°C overnight with a few fog patches developing late. Winds stay light, and the UV index climbs to 7 (high), so pack the sunscreen if you’re out enjoying the long June daylight. Full details from Environment Canada.

Mount McKay powwow marks National Indigenous Peoples Day

Hundreds made their way up Mount McKay on Sunday as Fort William First Nation hosted its annual powwow for National Indigenous Peoples Day — a day of dancing, drumming and teachings shared under the arbour. Head dancers Georgina and Kelvin Redsky led the grand entry, with the focus on passing traditions to the next generation and bringing Indigenous and non-Indigenous neighbours together.

Rain couldn’t stop the Walk to End ALS

Steady rain didn’t keep walkers off the shoreline path at Boulevard Lake on Saturday for the annual Walk to End ALS. About 60 registered participants — including Team Botsford, walking in memory of loved ones — pushed the local tally past $9,300 toward a $20,000 goal in support of ALS Canada’s care and research programs.

Jimmy John’s is on its way to Thunder Bay

“Coming soon” signs are up: U.S. sandwich chain Jimmy John’s is fitting out a spot next to Starbucks near the Arthur Street Marketplace. There’s no opening date yet, but it’s part of the chain’s push to add a dozen Canadian locations — and it gives fast-lunch fans one more option around town.

Rain and a red-hot Husky cool off the Border Cats

A soggy Father’s Day at Port Arthur Stadium went the visitors’ way. Duluth’s Jalen Smith launched two three-run homers and drove in seven as the Huskies took a rain-shortened 11-6 win. The Border Cats, who’d won five of their previous six, slip back to .500 at 14-14 and head to Duluth for a rematch.

Trivia answer: Three! An octopus has three hearts — two pump blood through the gills, and the third sends it to the rest of the body. That main heart even stops beating when the octopus swims, which is part of why they often prefer to crawl.
