Blue skies are back today after yesterday's clouds: expect full sunshine with a high of 28°C and a humidex near 30. It's a very high UV index of 8, so sunscreen, a hat and water are must-haves if you're out on the trails or down at the waterfront. Winds stay light and skies stay clear overnight, dropping to a comfortable low near 10°C. Looking ahead: a touch cooler but still sunny Friday (25°C), then a warm, humid weekend with a chance of showers and highs climbing toward 27–30°C. Full forecast at Environment Canada.

Council approves a 41-lot Neebing subdivision

After a lengthy public meeting, city council has unanimously approved a 41-lot rural residential subdivision on 15th Side Road and Mountain Road in the Neebing Ward. Developer BK Realty trimmed the plan from 61 lots down to 41, enlarged the lots, and completed environmental, traffic and hydrogeological studies — pledging to zone a block along Mosquito Creek for permanent protection. Nine residents still spoke against it, citing a crumbling road, stormwater worries and the loss of rural character, and council heard that new sidewalks aren't required (or funded) in rural areas for now.

The hospital buys $5.5M of land next door

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre has revealed it quietly bought the five-acre property at 1024 Oliver Road — home to the former JJ Kelso youth custody building — back in December for $5.5 million. A bidding war nearly doubled the $2.9M asking price. The hospital says buying now "avoids substantially higher future expansion costs," with options that include parking or room to grow to support patient care. The money came from hospital reserves, separate from the operating budget.

Vandalism forces Magnus Theatre's summer show indoors

The show will go on — just inside. Magnus Theatre is moving its upcoming production of Stan Rogers: A Matter of Heart indoors after repeated vandalism to the Saddle Span tent over its outdoor stage beside Waverley Park. Between June 28 and July 5, someone slashed the tent doors and cut out a large section of canvas — damage topping $10,000 that the non-profit says can't be repaired in time. Police have a report, and Magnus hopes to reopen the beloved outdoor venue in 2027.

The city plays catch-up on its park flowers

Noticed fewer blooms at your favourite park? The city fell behind on planting its flower beds this season, leaving spots like Hillcrest Park looking weedy — with some beds at the popular lookout still under tarps. Parks staff point to a small crew stretched thin and growing-pains at the new Centennial Conservatory greenhouse operation. The good news: the sunken garden is nearly finished, Hillcrest's beds should be done by the weekend, and the International Friendship Gardens are next in line.

Trivia answer: A flamboyance! A group of flamingos is called a "flamboyance" — a fittingly showy name for these bright pink, long-legged birds. Their colour actually comes from pigments in the algae and shrimp they eat.
