Free Monday-night concerts return to Waverley Park

One of the city's most beloved free summer traditions is back. The Waverley Park Summer Concert Series returns for another year of free Monday-night music at the historic band shell, running every Monday from July 6 through August 24, starting at 6:30 p.m. This year's lineup features Rodney Brown & Friends, The Sibley Strings Quartet, Southern Comfort and KT and the Rhythm Aces. Organizers say the crowds keep growing — with things pricey these days, a free night of music in the park is hard to beat.
Kirk takes a three-shot lead into the District Open finale

Thunder Bay's Jeremy Kirk fired a four-under 68 at Strathcona on Saturday — one of only two rounds under par all day — to take a three-shot lead into the final round of the AON District Open. Jason Johnstone sits second at one-under, with Jack Moro and Samuel Orr another shot back. The tournament wraps up Sunday at Whitewater Golf Club.
Police investigate an alleged hate-motivated Canada Day assault

Thunder Bay police are investigating an alleged hate-motivated assault on Canada Day. Police say a man was assaulted in the Villa Street and Cumberland Street North area just after 12:45 p.m. on July 1; one suspect was arrested and charged with assault, and the victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The National Council of Canadian Muslims says the man was targeted while walking to a park with his family, and is urging stronger action against Islamophobia. Police say everyone “has the right to feel safe in our community,” and the investigation is ongoing.
A motocross weekend honours the late Dave Mabee

Hundreds turned out at the Kakabeka Motocross track this weekend for the Superior MX Double Header, a two-day memorial race honouring the late Dave Mabee, a longtime rider and fixture of the local racing community. The event drew a record 152 entries, and organizers presented a $1,250 bursary to Confederation College's small-engine program in his memory. Racing continues Sunday from 9 a.m. — admission is $10, with food vendors on site. “He touched everybody's life,” said club president Ryan White.

Trivia answer: Saffron. It's hand-harvested from the crimson threads of crocus flowers — and because it takes roughly 150,000 blossoms to make a single kilogram, it can fetch thousands of dollars a pound.
